There are moments in time that are indelibly etched into our memories. These instances transcend time and space and take on a life of their own. One of those moments for Amy and I occurred one year ago today, February 24, 2017. This was the culmination of a sequence of events that began a little over a year before.
Amy spent January of 2016 in Greece writing stories for Hellenic Ministries. At the end of her month, she was encouraged to return as a full-time missionary. This echoed a call I’d received from the Lord during a missions trip to Greece in 2009.
With hearts unified in calling and purpose, we began exploring what our next steps looked like. We explored a whole bunch of opportunities and nothing seemed “right.” Then, in the course of a week, several different influencers in our lives all said “You’ve never been to Greece together, maybe you should go together. Take some time to pray and decide if this is where God really wants you.”
When everyone is saying the same thing, even a stubborn guy like me can get the message. So, just a few weeks later, we found ourselves in Greece meeting with Hellenic Ministries and seeking God’s direction for the future.
During our trip, we took a day for sightseeing and conversation. February 24, 2017 found us exploring the ruins of Delphi and talking about the future.
By the end of the day we were hungry, footsore and craving more good Greek food. This condition landed us at a picturesque taverna with a dining room overlooking the Gulf of Corinth. It was here that my life changed forever.
The place, the view, and the moment will be forever etched into my mind.
As Amy and I discussed all the possibilities and challenges of leaving family, friends, a steady job, and all the trappings of successful life in the US to become missionaries in Greece, I made a fateful statement:
If this was a corporate job with a salary and benefits, I wouldn’t even hesitate to take it.
Those words, once spoken, defined a new reality. It was time to move in faith. In that moment, Amy and I set a new course. We said yes to God, to Greece and to HM. And we haven’t looked back since.
Thank you for being a part of our journey and for celebrating this milestone day with us,
